The Camera Eye

Rush will be appearing on "The Colbert Report," and it's not Limbaugh.

The better of the two, the Canadian band Rush, which hasn't performed on U.S. television in more than three decades, will play the classic "Tom Sawyer" on the Comedy Central show tomorrow. The trio is currently on tour in the states, hasn't played on U.S. television since 1975.

The appearance partly stems from a February episode where the band was brought up. In a segment where Colbert is discussing Rush Limbaugh's influence on the Republican electorate he mentions how John McCain is winning in the Republican presidential primaries despite being opposed by major talk radio hosts such as Rush Limbaugh. He states that this has a lot of people questioning the influence of Rush. Immediately after saying this, a clip of Rush (the band) from their Tom Sawyer video plays. There is a second joke in the bit, which is near the midpoint, but you may as well check out the whole segment for the full understanding.

The show itself has steadily edged closer to "Ed Sullivan Show" territory, with increasingly frequent musical performances. Nas, Toby Keith and Crosby, Stills and Nash will play during the month as well. Originally launched as a parody of conservative political punditry — those shows do not make a habit of hosting music performances. But "The Report" circus has expanded into musical realms, often with Colbert joining in. John Legend, Neil Young, R.E.M., Tony Bennett, Peter Frampton, Willie Nelson, Barry Manilow, John Mellencamp, the Roots and Carole King have all performed on the show.

And speaking of Rush and elements of television, here's a South Park bit they've been using for their current Snakes & Arrows tour.

By the way, borrow mine or Ryan's rolling stone with the Rush article. It was either the current or the last issue. Its probably online. I learned some things.
