By perusing the site NHL Numbers you can go over each team’s salary hit and how much room they have left to make deals. Some teams, because of their recent activity find themselves over the $56.7 million cap. Teams like the Philadelphia Flyers, Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks are over the cap but still have time to bring their payrolls down (through a trade, for example) before the season begins. For the most part we’re only talking a couple of million dollars here and there. Then there’s my Los Angeles Kings.
The Kings are not over the cap. They are under. In fact, they are so far from the cap they could probably rent a B2 bomber to annihilate the opposition for the entire season and still come in under. The Kings have only 14 players signed and still have a staggering $28.9 million left until they hit the maximum allowed. Could be the shit-eating grin on GM Dean Lombardi’s face will probably start to fade once someone tells him that there is actually a minimum to spend. There are another 15 players and $12 million to go until that happens. Either we're going to be buying a lot of talent, or they'll be using the salary cap stash to pay the season ticket holders back. Good luck, Dean. And oy vey!
