Last night Lemon (aka S!) and I watched Rocket Science for our inaugural movie night, and it was pretty good.
Last year, when it came out, it never got the acclaim, or more importantly, the box office love that Juno did, and it's a far superior movie. Hal, the young, stuttering protagonist is clever and likable (unlike, say, a pregnant hipster), and he is surrounded by oddball characters that serve both the story and the context in which it takes place. Simply put, it's far more realistic, digestible, and enjoyable than that other film.
Rocket Science proves that characters can still be young but intelligent, odd but true-to-life, and most of all, endearing. The movie had some serious turns, but the whole thing was still approached with a quirky lightness that didn't detract from the plot or presentation. As a rom-com date film, coming-of-age tale, or even offbeat comedy, the film inhabits a little bit of all. And trust me, you could do much worse for a film...
