John McCain effectively sealed the Republican presidential nomination as Romney "suspended" his faltering campaign. That's the prettiest modification of the words quit, failed, or lost I've ever heard.
"I must now stand aside, for our party and our country," Romney said. "If I fight on in my campaign, all the way to the convention, I would forestall the launch of a national campaign and make it more likely that Senator Clinton or Obama would win. And in this time of war, I simply cannot let my campaign, be a part of aiding a surrender to terror." Yes, the terror that is a government that doesn't make policy decisions based on how much their friend's corporations will make. How pompous to think that he'd really be a factor had he stuck it out?
Within hours of Romney's speech, former Republican National Committee chairman Ken Mehlman endorsed McCain and urged all members of the GOP to back him. And to be at the launch pad to see Romney off on his trip to the red planet.
