Michael Crichton 1942-2008

Michael Crichton, the million-selling author of such science thrillers as "Jurassic Park," "Timeline" and "The Andromeda Strain," died of cancer at 66. He was said to have had a long battle with the illness.

The 6'9" author was also a screenwriter and filmmaker, earning producing and writing credits for the film versions of many of his titles. He also created the TV hospital series "ER". A new novel by Crichton had been tentatively scheduled to come next month, but publisher HarperCollins said the book was postponed indefinitely because of his illness.

"While the world knew him as a great storyteller that challenged our preconceived notions about the world around us — and entertained us all while doing so — his wife Sherri, daughter Taylor, family and friends knew Michael Crichton as a devoted husband, loving father and generous friend who inspired each of us to strive to see the wonders of our world through new eyes," his family said. Nothing was mentioned about the other four failed attempts at family - Crichton was married five times: Suzanna Childs, Joan Radam (1965–1970), Kathy St. Johns (1978–1980) and Anne-Marie Martin (the mother of his only child). Interestingly, they are all similar looking (blondes to boot).

I was big fan of Crichon and found his books to be not only technologically and scientifically well researched and developed, but also easy reads that made you turn the pages in anticipation. Certainly a precise writer who edited his work to essential information that kept it well paced and tight.

Did you happen to read State of Fear? I haven't, so maybe I should shut my mouth, but I am biased against it, or even wanting to read it, after my mother and I got into an argument about global warming. I was shocked that my mom was convinced by this book that global warming is not a man-made phenomenon.
That said, I certainly loved J.Park and Sphere.
