Unlocked

Todd Davis's identity has been stolen at least 13 times. But the difference between him and some other unlucky bastard is that Davis is CEO of LifeLock - a company that focuses in anti-identity-theft services. Perhaps that's not the most ringing endorsement.

LifeLock has already been fined $12,000,000 by the FTC for deceptive advertising, but they're still plugging along with their cocksure ads. The company is so good at providing anti-theft services, Davis throws out his Social Security Number with the ease of Hair Club president (who's also a member!). Meanwhile, collection agencies nationwide have been after him for debts that other people have racked up with his SSN.

The New Times (also based in Arizona where LifeLock is situated) really
pulled out some choice dirt on the company and their many shortcomings:

• A man in Texas had used Davis' ID to take out a $500 loan, and Davis didn't know about it until the unpaid account went to a collection agency.

• Fake Davises owe $573 to Credit One Bank and $312 to Swiss Colony, a gift-basket company.

• Co-founder Robert J. Maynard Jr. was banned for life in the 1990s from the credit-repair industry.

• Collection agencies are looking for compensation from "Davis": Bay Area Credit, $265; Associated Credit Services, $207 and $213; Enhanced Recovery Corporation, $250 and $381. And the whopper at NCO/Fin 22, $2,390.

• Accounts at USA Savings Bank and a Gap credit card, were opened successfully in Davis' name as of early 2009.

• Maynard's own father accused him of identity theft.

But hey, as long as they have his digits up and an easy target, yours are pretty safe...right?
