Pass the blame took an exciting step as the years of head trauma pro wrestler Chris Benoit suffered were suggested as possibly contributing to why he killed his wife, son and himself
The analysis by doctors affiliated with the Sports Legacy Institute suggests that repeated concussions could have contributed to the killings, but -- wait for it --there was no way to know for sure.
So with no way to know for sure and lacking clinical results, I guess the brain trauma angle is about as solid as demonic possession and alien mind control as culprit.
Michael Benoit agreed to the testing of his son's brain because the murder-suicide was so out of character -- but who exactly is that "in character" for? His son complained about suffering concussions, but that he knows of no medical records or records kept by the wrestling league to support the diagnosis. There are also no records anywhere else supporting this theory.
Steroid use has lingered as the most popular theory behind the killings, since anabolic steroids were found in Chris Benoit's home and tests conducted by authorities showed Benoit had roughly 10 times the normal level of testosterone in his system when he died. Extensive use can lead to paranoia, depression and violent outbursts, which sound about right for the case. Because if concussions really did lead to such a drastic and literally violent change in personality and actions, the NFL would be breeding more than dog fighters and out of wedlock children.
Benoit's father had the best closing line though: "The human skull is not built to get hit by a chair or something."
Amen to that.
