MITeed Off

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is suing architect Frank Gehry, alleging serious design flaws in the Stata Center.

The building, celebrated for its unconventional walls and radical angles, has persistent leaks, drainage problems and mold growing on its brick exterior, according to the school. They add that accumulations of snow and ice have fallen dangerously from window boxes and other areas of its roofs, blocking emergency exits and causing damage.

Details from the suit show MIT paid Gehry Partners $15 million to design the Stata Center, which totaled $300 million to build. The Picasso version of a building houses labs, offices, classrooms and meeting rooms, plus makes students who are on drugs totally freak the fuck out.

"Gehry breached its duties by providing deficient design services and drawings," according to the school, and they include Skanska USA Building Inc. in the suit as well.

Neither Gehry Partners nor MIT commented because of the pending lawsuit, but Skanska executives claim Gehry ignored warnings from Skanska and a consulting company before construction that there were flaws in the design, claiming "this is not a construction issue, never has been."

Between Gehry, who also did the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain and the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the score of big brains at MIT, I think it's hilarious that nobody noticed any potential design flaws. Pure genius.
