This Weekend, The Winner Is...

The Oscars are this weekend, and you ought to have a few goods drinking games to get you through the telecast. You have your pick of games from Flavorpill, Film.com, Lazydork, and Vagabond Scholar, for starters. But Film Drunk's is my favorite so far:

• Every time someone mentions Haiti, Chile, or earthquakes; take a drink.

• Every time someone references the Na’avi, Pandora, blue people, Avatar, James Cameron, or 3D; take a drink.

• Every time you see someone wearing a colored ribbon on their lapel; drink.

• Every time you stifle a fat joke about Gabourey Sidibe; drink.

• Reading glasses? Someone pretends to go off teleprompter? Drink.

• Music starts to play before someone finishes their speech? Drink.

• Fat guy with a beard on stage? Drink.

• “I’m honored just to be mentioned with the other nominees.” Drink.

• Someone makes a Meryl Streep joke; drink.

• Random cut to George Clooney in the audience? Finish your beer.

• Winner cries during acceptance speech? Finish your beer.

• Meryl Streep takes a dump on the stage? Take three speedballs and queef on a turtle.

Plus they have a great guide to the awards. I just hope Avatar doesn't win best picture. It wasn't.

And as a note,
Velvet Glove - Iron Fist is 100% back to normal and up to date, so enjoy getting a humor concussion.

Best of the week: It's no good for a family values Republican to get picked up on a DUI. But substantially worse to get picked up for a DUI after
leaving a gay nightclub with an unidentified man in a state vehicle. That's the story of state Senator Roy Ashburn (R-Bakersfield).

Ashburn, a fierce opponent of gay rights, has been fighting marriage equality and organizing anti-gay marriage rallies as part of his "Traditional Family Values" campaign. But that message needs some clarification, since CHP officers observed him
weaving and driving erratically in downtown Sacramento at 2AM. After a field sobriety test, officers determined that Ashburn, who reeked of alcohol and had bloodshot, watery eyes, was under the influence of alcohol and placed him under arrest. He was released from jail just before 4 AM.

Initial reports only noted the DUI arrest and Ashburn issued a
contrite apology. But later that evening, a CBS affiliate in Sacramento reported that "sources" confirmed that Ashburn had left Faces, a gay nightclub in downtown Sacramento, just prior to his arrest. The state issued black Chevrolet Tahoe Ashburn was driving has been impounded at the state Capitol.

You can follow all the developments on the story
here, and take some time catching up on the greatest GOP sex scandals of the past.

Plus: An Orange County jury (rightly) declined to hold Botox maker Allergan Inc. liable in the death of a 7-year-old Texas girl being treated for cerebral palsy because it found the company's warning labels adequate. I'll say - they clearly state that children under 11 should not have Botox without adult supervision.

The case involving the girl was believed to be the first of its kind to go to trial, as the girl's family alleged that the product was responsible for her death. What did they expect but giving a paralysing neuro-toxin to their kid anyway? At issue was the safety of the blockbuster cosmetic drug in the higher dosages that are used in pediatric cerebral palsy cases and the adequacy of the Irvine manufacturer's warning labels.

Kristen Spears, who was born with severe cerebral palsy, began receiving large doses of Botox at age 6 in an effort to reduce debilitating limb spasticity. The girl died in late November 2007. Best known as a face-lift-in-a-syringe, Botox can relax contorted muscles and sometimes help young patients walk without surgery. U.S. regulators have not specifically approved the use of Botox in children, but doctors may legally prescribe it as an "off-label" use. Dosages used in such patients are many times those recommended for facial wrinkle injections.

Dee Spears alleged that her daughter died as a result of an overdose of Botox, which led to respiratory failure and pneumonia, and that Allergan failed to adequately warn the girl's pediatrician of the drug's risks. The jury, which deliberated for several hours over two days, did not agree. The panel found that Botox posed risks of "a substantial danger" that "ordinary consumers" would not have recognized, according to the verdict form. But jurors concluded that Allergan did not breach its duty to warn of those potential risks and therefore could not be held responsible for any potential adverse effect.

While Allergan faces another civil trial set for next month in Oklahoma City, I am predicting a victory there too. Because even though Americans are stupid and sentimental, I think that even the folks in Oklahoma City can understand that the product, when used as instructed - for it's intended purposes - is adequately covered in their warnings.

Also: Starbucks Corp. is sticking to its policy of letting customers carry guns where it's legal and said it does not want to be put in the middle of a larger gun-control debate. As they should...but if you're charging me a premium for a coffee, do you really want me to be armed and still pay that much?

The company's statement stems from recent campaign by some gun owners, who have walked into Starbucks and other businesses to test state laws that allow gun owners to carry weapons openly in public places. Gun control advocates have protested. Oh, you're just upset you can have guns but you don't.

The fight began heating up in January in Northern California and has since spread to other states and other companies, bolstered by the pro-gun group OpenCarry.org. What? A pro-gun group getting into the mix? Why, that's unheard of!

Some of the events were spontaneous, with just one or two gun owners walking into a store. Others were organized parades of dozens of gun owners walking into restaurants with their firearms proudly at their sides. Predictably, they were sat preferentially. The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence retaliated and launched a petition drive, demanding that the company "offer espresso shots, not gunshots" and declare its coffeehouses "gun-free zones." The group planned to deliver 28,000 signatures to the coffee giant's headquarters in Seattle. The group also held a press conference near Seattle's Pike Place Market, just a few yards away from where the first Starbucks cafe opened. Gun rights advocates showed up as well, some carrying handguns in holsters around their waists.

Businesses can choose to ban guns from their premises, and Starbucks said that it complies with local laws in the 43 states that have open-carry weapon laws. Wait, who are the seven that are behind the times? "Were we to adopt a policy different from local laws allowing open carry, we would be forced to require our partners to ask law abiding customers to leave our stores, putting our partners in an unfair and potentially unsafe position," the company said in its statement.

Starbucks asked both gun enthusiasts and gun-control advocates "to refrain from putting Starbucks or our partners into the middle of this divisive issue." It said security measures are in place for any "threatening situation" that might occur in stores. But they're not. If somebody brings a gun in and starts blasting, there's no coffee bean ninja waiting to save you. Though you can bet they will call the police.

And: Teens are getting high on an emerging drug called "fake weed," a concoction also known as K2 and "spice" that is also causing hallucinations, vomiting, agitation and other dangerous effects. HE WHO CONTROLS THE SPICE, CONTROLS THE UNIVERSE! (where else can I make a Dune joke?)

In the last month, a professor of toxicology at Saint Louis University, has seen nearly 30 cases of teenagers experiencing these adverse effects after smoking the fake weed, a legal substance that reportedly offers a marijuana-like high. "K2 use is not limited to the Midwest; reports of its use are cropping up all over the country," he said. "I think K2 is likely a bigger problem than we're aware of at this time." For instance, Atlanta has seen about 12 cases recently. Are you kidding?

K2 has been sold since 2006 as incense or potpourri for about $30 to $40 per three gram bag - comparable in cost to marijuana. "K2 may be a mixture of herbal and spice plant products, but it is sprayed with a potent psychotropic drug and likely contaminated with an unknown toxic substance that is causing many adverse effects," the professor added.

This K2 compound was first created in the mid-1990s in the lab of organic chemist John W. Huffman of Clemson University, who studies cannabinoid receptors. He's not sure how the recipe for what is named JWH-018 (his initials) got picked up, but he did publish details on a series of compounds including JWH-018 in a book chapter. Even before that book came out, he recalls learning that in China and Korea people were selling the compound as a plant growth stimulant. As for where it was first smoked or used as a recreational drug, Huffman thinks perhaps somewhere in Europe.

"Apparently somebody picked it up, I think in Europe, on the idea of doping this incense mixture with the compound and smoking it. You can get very high on it. It's about 10 times more active than THC," the active ingredient in marijuana, he said.

Leave it to the dummies to try and get even higher with odd shit. Look, you can get plenty stoned on regular dope, and don't need that tenfold. And if you really need to be that much higher, switch from weed to LSD.

Worst of the week: The Republican National Committee plans to raise money this election cycle through an aggressive campaign capitalizing on “fear” of President Barack Obama and a promise to "save the country from trending toward socialism." And with totally inappropriate imagery too.

The strategy was detailed in a confidential party fundraising presentation which also outlines how “ego-driven” wealthy donors can be tapped with offers of access and “tchochkes.” The presentation was delivered by RNC Finance Director Rob Bickhart to top donors and fundraisers at a party retreat in Boca Grande, Florida on February 18, a source at the gathering said.

Manipulating donors with crude caricatures and playing on their fears is hardly unique to Republicans or to the RNC – Democrats raised millions off George W. Bush in similar terms – but rarely is it practiced in such cartoonish terms. One page, headed “The Evil Empire,” pictures Obama as the Joker from Batman, while House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leaders Harry Reid are depicted as Cruella DeVille and Scooby Doo, respectively.

The document, which two Republican sources said was prepared by the party’s finance staff, comes as Chairman Michael Steele struggles to retain the trust and allegiance of major donors, who can give as much as $30,400 a year to the party. Under Steele, the RNC has shifted toward a reliance on small donors, but the document reveals extensive, confidential details of the strategy for luring wealthy checkwriters, which range from luxury retreats in California wine country to tickets to a professional fight in Las Vegas. Basically, they're also going after small fish in addition to the big whales, and they're using chum tactics to get their dollars. No surprise they're putting blood in the water.

Plus: Brendon (
WWTDD) has this so nailed, all I need to do is post it. And seethe.

Sean Penn is throwing another hissy fit today because he pouts like a little girl if everyone doesn’t kiss his ass 24 hours a day. The new temper tantrum is about his heroic efforts in Haiti. He says he went down there and was a daring angel of mercy, and if you dare question the amazing Sean Penn about how amazing Sean Penn is, then he hopes you “die screaming of rectal cancer.”

…some have argued that celebs like Penn should stay out of aid efforts, insisting that stars use tragedy merely to rebuild their public image. But in an interview this weekend on CBS News’ Sunday Morning, Penn says he ignores the negative chatter.

“I guess I’ve been so away from it all– and our tent camp in Haiti that I haven’t had an awful lot of time to pay attention to them,” he says. “You know, do I hope that those people die screaming of rectal cancer? Yeah. You know, but I’m not going to spend a lot of energy on it.”

The problem here is that Sean Penn lies his ass off constantly. He lied about the stuff he did in New Orleans during Katrina, so why the hell would anyone believe similar stories about Haiti.

Penn told Larry King he arrived in New Orleans on day 4 (says it right here). He stresses the point several times. In reality he got there on day 7. Katrina hit New Orleans on August 29th. Here’s a Rolling Stone article written on September 2nd that says Penn leaves for New Orleans “tomorrow.” He got into New Orleans around midnight on the 3rd. The picture above was taken on the 4th, his only day there.

Day 4 was when the first 6,500 national guard troops arrived in New Orleans. On day 5 the first emergency supplies arrived. By the time Penn got there on day 7, the National Guard troops had grown to 27,000 and the Coast Guard had rescued 15,665 people. Even the Superdome had been evacuated by then. Big difference between day 4 and day 7.

He told King, “we were able to just get a boat out in the water and help people out of the water, and go back out and do it again. So it was kind of a no-brainer, and kind of shamefully so, because there should have been more support there.”

27,000 troops. 15,000 rescues. But he wouldn’t look as cool if he said, “By the time I left the Four Seasons hotel in Houston (
seriously) there wasn’t much to do,” so he changes things around to make himself more heroic.

He also told King, “We had a lot of people that were not willing to get on a boat and get out.”

Oh there’s a fuckin surprise. Let’s say a guy with greasy hair and a bad mustache pulls up to you and he’s not a cop and yet
he’s holding a shotgun and has a bulletproof vest and the boat didn’t as much “pull up” as it did “scrape along the street because it was in 5 inches of water” and he’s telling you he wants to take you somewhere. Does that look like someone here to help? Or does it look like someone who says “nigger” a lot in a town already littered with dead bodies.

Also: Israel's military said that a planned raid on a West Bank village was called off after a soldier disclosed its details online. Ummm...unfriend?

The military said the soldier posted the time and location of the raid on his Facebook page, saying that troops were planning on "cleaning up" the village. Fellow soldiers reported the leak to military authorities, who canceled the raid, fearing that the information may have reached hostile groups and put troops at risk. The soldier was court-martialed and sentenced to 10 days in prison. He was also removed from his battalion and combat postings. What a fuckhead.

A military statement added that it is cracking down on soldiers' use of social networking Web sites and has launched a campaign warning of the dangers of sharing military information online. "Uploading classified information to social networks or any Web site exposes the information to anyone who wishes to view it, including foreign and hostile intelligence services," the military statement read. "Hostile intelligence agents scan the Internet with an eye toward collecting information on the IDF (Israel Defense Forces), which may undermine operational success and imperil IDF forces."

The military said that soldiers were prohibited from publishing classified information, including photographs containing military data. In posters placed on military bases, a mock Facebook page shows the images of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Syrian President Bashar Assad and Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah. Below their pictures — and Facebook "friend requests" — reads the slogan: "You think that everyone is your friend?"

And: One in four parents buys unproven vaccine-autism link. That means 25% of parents are unfit to raise their children.

Yes, they believe some vaccines cause autism in healthy children - without proof, but even many of those worried about vaccine risks think their children should be vaccinated. Most parents continue to follow the advice of their children's doctors, according to a study based on a survey of 1,552 parents. Let's repeat - extensive research has found no connection between autism and vaccines.

"Nine out of 10 parents believe that vaccination is a good way to prevent diseases for their children," said lead author of the study from University of Michigan. "Luckily their concerns don't outweigh their decision to get vaccines so their children can be protected from life-threatening illnesses." In 2008, unvaccinated school-age children contributed to measles outbreaks in California, Illinois, Washington, Arizona and New York. Thirteen percent of the 140 who got sick that year were hospitalized. Thanks, assholes.

Fear of a vaccine-autism connection stems from a flawed and speculative 1998 study that recently was retracted by a British medical journal. The retraction came after a council that regulates Britain's doctors ruled the study's author acted dishonestly and unethically. Some doctors are taking a tough stand, asking vaccine-refusing parents to find other doctors and calling such parents "selfish."

Twenty-five percent of the parents said they agreed "some vaccines cause autism in healthy children." Among mothers, 29% agreed with that statement; among fathers, it was 17 percent. Nearly 12% of the parents said they'd refused a vaccine for their children that a doctor recommended. Of those, 56% said they'd refused the relatively new vaccine against human papillomavirus, or HPV, which can cause cervical cancer. Others refused vaccines against meningococcal disease (32%), chickenpox (32%) and measles-mumps-rubella (18%).

Perhaps one day, these morons will come to their senses. Or at least we can persecute them for child endangerment.

Kid / Power

Perhaps spurred by their Winter Olympics shortcomings, Russia’s Defense Ministry has shown interest in a new electomechanical rifle the performance of which exceeds that of sniper weapons. And to show you how badass they are, the rifle was invented by a schoolboy in the city of Ufa.

Maxim Kotelnikov, an eighth-grader, designed his weapon after he had seen a TV program about the use of similar rifles in the USA and Korea. It took the boy a year to design the new weapon. He used his friend’s broken game rifle as the basis. When I was in eight grade? I was trying not to have an ill timed boner during class.

The rifle weighs slightly over 10 lbs; it fires special cartridges that need to be magnetized in advance. Russia’s Defense Ministry showed interest in the new weapon and asked the boy’s permission to test his rifle.

“This weapon is unique for it fires noiselessly. There is no shock of discharge and a shot does not produce a flare. No other sniper rifle can do it. I designed my own system, which I called the “Nucleus System,” the boy said. The rifle is based on the principle of accelerating coil, and is powered with electricity only.

Maxim first showed his creation to his teacher of physics. A teacher then sent him to St. Petersburg, where the boy took part in “Russia’s Young Intellectuals” forum. The 15-year-old boy took the first place at the forum and received a special invitation for practice at the defense ministry. All further tests of Maxim’s weapon will be conducted under the guidance of ministerial scientists.

The boy will assemble three other rifles in St. Petersburg during one month. If the tests are successful, it is not ruled out that the electromagnetic sniper rifle will be launched into serial production for the needs of the Russian armed forces.

A Touch Off

The monster tremor in Chile killed at least 800 people and supposedly moved gigantic masses around the planet. NASA had reported that the catastrophe shifted the Earth’s axis and made a day shorter by a fraction. But now German researchers have said that the claims are completely without basis.

Who are you going to believe - scientists from the most anal, precise nation in the world, or the guys who crashed a dune buggy on Mars.

NASA scientists said on Tuesday that the earthquake moved the Earth’s axis by eight centimetres; Richard Gross used a computer model to come to this conclusion. He also claimed that days will become shorter by 1.26 microseconds.

“Unverifiable,” declared a top German scientist as he put the Earth back on track. Professor Rainer Kind (that's a hardcore name) from the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) in Potsdam said: “It is highly doubtful that these calculations are correct. The changes to the Earth’s axis caused by an earthquake would be so tiny that it isn’t measurable and therefore impossible to reliably detect.”

Existing calculations of the movement of the Earth’s axis by past earthquakes are still being debated, the expert added. Professor Karl-Heinz Glassmeier from the Deutschen Geophysikalischen Gesellschaft (you mean, German Geophysical Association?) also criticised the alleged discovery: “NASA can only make the headlines with it. A figure of eight centimetres is absolutely unverifiable.”

The influence of an earthquake on the Earth’s tilt would in any case be extremely low, explained Dr. Mojib Latif from The Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences in Kiel. He said, “The heavenly bodies around us are mainly responsible for the Earth’s tilt. The gravity of the heavy and big planets in particular determines the gradient of the Earth’s axis. "That can not be changed by an earthquake, even one as powerful as that in Chile.”

Professor Kind added: “It is impossible that there could ever be such a severe earthquake which would observably move the Earth’s axis. That would only be possible through outside influences, for example a meteorite.

Good enough for me. Besides, those Germans sound scary.

Billionaire Justice

An Egyptian court ordered the retrial of a real estate mogul sentenced to death for murdering his former lover, a Lebanese pop star. Can't buy me love...but freedom, that's another story.

The Cairo appeals court overturned the conviction of Hisham Talaat Mustafa, prompting cheers and applause from the billionaire tycoon's relatives in the packed downtown courtroom, who no doubt will stay in his will.

Moustafa was sentenced to death last May after being convicted of paying retired Egyptian police officer Mohsen Sukkari $2 million to kill Suzanne Tamim, while she was in Dubai in July 2008.

"The court has decided to accept ... the appeal presented by the defendants on procedural and content basis," said Judge Adel Abdel Hamid, who leads a panel of 11 judges, and will soon see an undisclosed "donation" made to his newly acquired Cayman Island bank account. "There will be a retrial," but conveniently, the reasons will be issued later. Gotta see that wire transfer go through, okay pal?
Lawyers argued against the sentence on grounds of faulty procedures, starting from the arrest to details of the Dubai investigation, and mostly finding fault with the guilty verdict. Sukkari will be retried as well.

That pretty much proves a real estate mogul with ties to President Hosni Mubarak's son, Gamal, and an influential member of the ruling party, can get away with murder in a region where the rich are often thought to be immune. Moustafa, a member of parliament's upper house, the Shura Council, was also a member the ruling party's policies committee, which the younger Mubarak chairs.

The dead Tamim rose to stardom in the late 1990s on the force of her good looks and voice - in that order, much like all pop stars. But she hit troubled times, separating from her Lebanese husband-manager, who filed a series of lawsuits against her. Tamim and Moustafa met in the summer of 2004 at a Red Sea resort, Sukkari said in the transcripts in the trial that Moustafa was "always with Tamim," that he kept a hotel suite for her, and that he took her around in his private jet.

During interrogations, Moustafa said he broke up with Tamim after his mother opposed the couple's marriage plan. Moustafa comes from a religiously conservative Muslim family, which in the Arab world, can be grounds for manslaughter, but not murder.

A Disturbance In The Force

Weather Sealed mixes Star Wars and fast food:

Imagine, if you will, the burger force – a field of energy that radiates from every freshly-cooked patty, earth-penetrating and inverse-squared with distance, compelling the hungry carnivore to seek out and devour the well-done ground beef at the source.

Now, wrap that concept in a Star Wars motif – set in the present day, with the second-tier burger chains as the rebels – each, by themselves, without mutual aid, battling the 12,000-plus restaurant McEmpire. The situation is most dire, for the upstarts control but a few significant islands of territory amid the overwhelming and darkly-rendered influence of the McForce:

The territory controlled by the top 8 U.S. burger chains.

Territory controlled by the eight largest U.S. burger chains.

In this and the following graphic, each individual restaurant location has equal power. The entity that controls each point casts the most aggregate burger force upon it, as calculated by the inverse-square law – kind of like a chart outlining the gravitational wells of galactic star clusters, but in an alternate, fast food universe.

By far, the largest pocket of resistance is Sonic Drive-In’s south-central stronghold: more than 900 restaurants packed into the state of Texas alone. Sheer density is the key to victory!

The rebels already have the numbers – over 24,000 locations in total – but they’ve divided and conquered themselves by strict adherence to the peacetime principles of brand identity and corporate structure. This is war, and for the sake of self-preservation, all must be sacrificed! Kings and Queens: get used to hanging with the common folk. Tone down the sarcasm, Jack. And everyone, please, stop yanking Wendy’s pigtails! Y’all need to work in harmony to succeed with the winning strategy: an Alliance!

Together, the rebels double the output of the McEmpire, and, behind the united force of their burgers, dominate all but a few stubborn pockets of the Northeast and Midwest:

Territory controlled by McDonald's versus allied competition.

Territory controlled by McDonald's versus allied competitors.

Viva a New Hope: under the guise of char-broiled patties, seasoned curly fries, and having it your way!

Now, pan the camera to a bluff above a generic Great Plains suburb, and zoom towards the lone silhouette at top: an aboriginal American, staring down into the sprawl, chewing on a hunk of pemmican, and gently weeping.

Trade Deadlineageddon 2010

After spanking Dallas 5-1 last night and showing no signs of Olympic rust, the Kings became buyers for the first time in years as the playoff push kicked into overdrive.

Rich from
LA Kings Insider got the ball rolling reporting from a source at TSN (The Sports Network, basically Canada's ESPN and pretty much ground zero for hockey info) that the Kings have acquired veteran forward Jeff Halpern from Tampa Bay. "I would assume that nothing more than a mid-round pick would be in play here, but I’ll find out ASAP..." He added:

The price for Jeff Halpern, to Tampa Bay, is Teddy Purcell and a third-round pick. Not sure if the pick is conditional or not, but it doesn’t appear so at the moment. Halpern turns 34 in May and will provide depth on the third or fourth line, as well as kill penalties. He has leadership ability as well, as he was the captain of the United States’ 2008 World Championships team.

Puck Daddy also reported:

...the Los Angeles Kings trading the forever-promising Teddy Purcell and a third-round pick that belongs to Florida to the Tampa Bay Lightning for Jeff Halpern. Nice grinder down the lineup for the Kings, with some leadership, and the Kings can clear his salary after this season.

As for Purcell, the majority opinion on Purcell is that he ran out of chances in LA and, in the opinion of one observer, is "soft as a pillow." Sounds like a 3 Milbury trade at the moment.

He nailed that one on Purcell - that guy never stepped it up enough. Other draws from Manchester (the AHL affiliate) like Scott Parse and Brandon Segal came up and put up the numbers and played well. Here's the Puck Daddy rating system:

One Milbury: A fair trade that helps both teams, both in the short term and in the long run. No winner, no loser: Just a solid deal founded on smart financial and hockey needs. Think Brad Boyes for Dennis Wideman.

Two Milburys: A trade that could, down the road, burn one team in a big way. We're talking a trade of blue-chip prospects for a rental, if the team that's renting clearly isn't going to win it all this season.

Three Milburys means a clear winner in a deal at the time of the trade. Someone got a little too desperate, or someone just got hosed.

Four Milburys! Bertuzzi, McCabe and eventually
Jarkko Ruutu for Trevor Linden! Roberto Luongo and Olli Jokinen for Mark Parrish and Oleg Kvasha! YASHIN! DISASTER!

Ross McKeon (Yahoo! Sports) had this analysis of the trade:
This is a typical Dean Lombardi pick-up at the deadline for a team that might potentially find itself playing postseason hockey for the first time in what seems like forever. Halpern will be looked to kill penalties, win faceoffs, anchor a third or fourth line and, above all else, bring that veteran experience and playoff savvy into a wide-eyed locker room. Halpern is set to be an unrestricted free agent in the offseason. Purcell, 24, averaged 11 minutes a night for the Kings and is set to be a restricted free agent in July.
Then, it was announced that Fredrik Modin was apparently been traded to the Kings for a conditional seventh-round pick...pretty much the same as giving up a bag of pucks. Modin is in the twilight of his career, but he's a big LW, and clearly the additions of he and Halpern was to beef up the team and add experienced, tough players for a post-season run. McKeon said, "Everyone knows Modin has one of the heaviest shots in the league, but he just can’t stay healthy." His guess was Kings’ GM Lombardi was probably talking to the Blue Jackets about Raffi Torres, but once he went to Buffalo he turned his attention to Modin. "The Kings had cap space and didn’t want to let it go to waste, especially when they know Modin comes off the books in the summer."

Surprising / not surprising was the non-movement of Alexander Frolov, who seems to play just well enough but has yet to breakout and be a top player. Any search with him and the word trade will pull up plenty of hits, and I'm guessing that the Kings plan is to try and resign him to a short term contract. By not dealing an upcoming free agent tells me they're not worried about losing him in the summer blitz for nothing in return, and are intent on keeping him...yet considering the annual tradebait chat, to give him a huge, multi-year deal would make him hard to unload.

ESPN has a
full trade tracker, if you care about any of those other teams (only to see if any are bigger challenges down the stretch). Welcome, new Kings!

UPDATE: First, Puck Daddy's grades for the whole group of trades. Also, Dean Lombardi spoke with Heidi Androl at LAKings.com to talk about this acquisition and his thoughts during the 2009-10 NHL trade deadline, with video both on Halpern and on Modin. Coach Murrary has audio on Halpern and Modin as well.

And I'm adding this piece from LA Kings Insider about the aforementioned constant Frolov trade rumors, which gives a little more understanding about the situation.

In three years of blogging, this might be my favorite post, and if you’ve been reading the blog(s) for a while, you probably know why. I asked Dean Lombardi about Alexander Frolov, and how close he had come, if at all, to pulling the trigger on a trade.

LOMBARDI: “Never an issue. We can put this thing to bed. I have never had a deal for Frolov, or even close to a deal for Frolov. You can put that in writing, finally, with the trade deadline done. I have never had anything close for trading Fro. I think those rumors about him started when, yeah, we gave him a little boot there when we called him out after the Columbus game (in October). It’s just amazing how stuff comes out, that it’s a fire sale on this guy and he’s going to be gone. For all the guys you talk about, leading up to the deadline, there was nothing even close for Fro. Not even close. It’s just ridiculous.

“We all know what the issues are with Fro, and (reporters) call and say, `Are you looking to get rid of this guy?’ No. But it’s no different than anybody. If Gretzky can be traded, anybody can be traded. But to think that I’m just trying to get rid of this guy, there’s no chance. This is still a good player. To think that we were out there trying to shop this guy, it’s ridiculous. That’s a classic example to me. Not one of those rumors was even close. Sometimes rumors out there at least make sense, or there was at least talk about it. This was all ridiculous.

“The worst thing was, I felt terrible. I called him up to the office to bust him a little bit about the Russian Olympic team, in a good-natured way. The poor kid thought he was getting traded. I completely forgot about it. Before the trade deadline, the last thing a player wants to hear is, `The GM wants to see you.’ I forgot about that part. I’m looking at him, thinking, `Why is he so sheepish?’ Then I started (teasing him) and he didn’t know what to make of it. He’s thinking he’s being traded, and I just called him up to give him crap about the Russians.”

A Creative Imagination

“It is with deep regret that Henry Holt and Company announces that we will not print, correct or ship copies of Charles Pellegrino’s `The Last Train From Hiroshima,’” the publisher said in a statement. The publisher “will issue full credit to wholesalers and retailers who wish to return the book.”

Not quite the marketing campaign he was hoping for.

Let's back up for a moment. Charles Pellegrino wrote his book, which was optioned by James Cameron, and he also served as a consultant on Avatar. Cameron even wrote introductions for Pellegrino’s 2000 book Ghosts Of The Titanic, and 2007’s The Jesus Family Tomb. And now he's just another liar trying to make a buck.

Holt said that Pellegrino “was not able to answer” several concerns, including whether two men mentioned in the text actually existed. Doubts were first raised about the book a week ago after Pellegrino acknowledged that one of his interview subjects had falsely claimed to be on one of the planes accompanying the Enola Gay. Holt had initially promised to send a corrected edition. But further doubts about the book emerged. The publisher was unable to determine the existence of a Father Mattias (the first name is not given), who supposedly lived in Hiroshima at the time of the bombing, and John MacQuitty, identified as a Jesuit scholar presiding over Mattias’ funeral.

“I read a number of books on this period of time and none of them mentioned Mattias or MacQuitty. I knew there was no way those people could have been omitted if they were real,” said history professor Barton Bernstein, of Stanford University. And with a serious name like that, he's got to know a bunch and be right.

But the bullshit was not contained to the print world. Pellegrino’s website lists him as having a Ph.D. from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand. The school said it has no such record. Pellegrino said that his degree was revoked over a dispute on evolutionary theory. Pellegrino’s site also says he was a “founding member” of the Challenger Center for Space Science Education, an organization started soon after the 1986 shuttle tragedy. Center spokesman Rob Cork said that Pellegrino has never served on the board of directors and that there is no record of his giving money.

“All I know is that Charlie would not fabricate, so there must be a reason for the misunderstanding,” Cameron said, trying not to look like a sap. Cameron said he does not have a shooting script for the Hiroshima film project and “no decision has been made to proceed in the short term.” He added that his decision about the project would not be influenced “by the issue of a single flawed source.”

And then the story will slowly fade into obscurity and no mention of it by Cameron will ever happen. The guy made two films in the last 12 years...he's not making too many quick decisions.

"Love", Actually

Normally, I don't get involved in the trite dealings of "reality" programming, but there's been an obnoxious wave of publicity and awareness washing over the interweb regarding the latest season of The Bachelor.

Every little bit I hear and see makes the show seem more ridiculous. Tenley or Vienna? Is he choosing a spouse or a breakfast tea? And the people chiming in like it matters. What is most amazing is that people get sucked in and waste a single emotional drop caring about the contrived romance jiggered together for ratings. Folks, after 13 seasons of this nonsense, the bachelor's record is and 1-12 (and that one a gimme just because one of the couples broke up in 2007 and got back together a year later). That's programming, not love.

Even if you didn't watch the show - and never will, here's the
Warming Glow live Twitter feed of the show. It is infinitely funnier and more interesting than that roses-for-whores exchange ever could be. And you'll hate how stupid the show is exponentially more.

• Note to fans of masochism: I will be live-tweeting tonight's "Bachelor" finale from this here feed. It's possible I won't survive.

• Get ready for "The Bachelor," bitches! Blast this and get ready for LOVE! http://bit.ly/ur8gM

• 45 seconds in: I feel ill.

• I plan on keeping a tab on the number of times Jake calls being on a reality show "a journey." So far: two.

• "There's something so natural about Vienna, the bottle blonde who has chased me relentlessly." Jake is so, so wise.

• Holy fuck, Jake's conversation with his family is so staged that I can't believe people watch this. I'm gonna need to start drinking soon.

• So, Jake's family likes the cute, sweet girl. However, Jake fears they're going to dislike the trashy slut.

• Jake: "It would be great to start a family with Tenley. But Vienna gives KILLER head!" (I'm reading between the lines.)

• Vienna's less attractive and less interesting than Tenley, and cross-eyed to boot. Translation: she spends ten hours a day doing kegels.

• Ah, the sweet release of commercials. Never leave me

• GAHHHHHHHHH THIS BITCH IS SO UGLY!
http://bit.ly/cFt4J9 And that's a GOOD picture.

• I'm gonna put my gay pants on for a second and say: Vienna needs a hot oil treatment and some conditioner. Damn, girl. You broke.

• Jake: "I have no idea who I'm going to propose to... is what the producer is telling me to say."

• For those asking me to give this up: No. I'm sorry. I must do this. I will emerge from this crucible stronger. And drunk.

• Jake: "I look at Vienna and Tenley, and I see my future wife in both of them." THAT MAKES NO SENSE.

• Okay, I survived 48 minutes without booze. But I'm drawing the line at "I love you" written in the mud on Jake's bare torso. Whiskey ahoy!

• Vienna's hair actually looks BETTER with mud in it. ("Journey" count now at three.)

• Vienna: "I have a very special gift for Jake tonight." Yeah, she washed her hair.

• Thanks to @
effedparkslope and @lucasshanks for also live-tweeting this. It makes me feel less alone. ("Journey" count: 4)

• Aw, Tenley's so sweet. Why can't I find an attractive simpleton?

• Awwww, Tenley gave Jake a very sweet shadowbox of their memories that was made by an assistant producer for the show.

• For the record, Vienna's hair STILL looks like shit. Also: we are FINALLY rewarded with "On the Wings of Love."
http://bit.ly/ur8gM

• Okay, one final
#bachelor tweet: seriously, I can't get over how retarded Vienna looks. Except retards have more life in their eyes.

Я очень рад, ведь я, наконец, возвращаюсь домой

What, No Man-Bear-Pig?

Matt from Warming Glow adds to the monster mystique of Syfy's programing:

Depending on your interest in film, you might not have heard of Roger Corman. He’s going to get an honorary Oscar this year, largely because the tireless director/producer helped launch the careers of Hollywood luminaries like Martin Scorsese, James Cameron, Jack Nicholson, Francis Ford Coppola, Ron Howard, Robert De Niro, and Sylvester Stallone, among others.

More notably for our purposes, Corman is producing the Syfy original movies Dinoshark and the unrelated Sharktopus, neither of which should be confused with his 2004 work Dinocroc, or, for that matter, the other 400 films — mostly B-movies — Corman has made during his career. Clearly, this is a man who knows and understands the appeal of a hypothetical monster comprised of two or more badass animals.

But there are still so many possibilities that have yet to be made into low-budget Syfy original movies with terrible CGI animation! Why, I went through Corman’s IMDb page, and not one movie had the word “bear” in the title. HOW CAN YOU WORK IN THE MEDIUM OF BADASS HYBRID MONSTER MOVIES WITHOUT ANY BEAR-BASED MONSTERS?

So let’s correct that. Here are nine totally badass hybrid monsters that deserve to star in their own B-movies. Some are bear-related; some are not. Some of these you might have seen around the Internet before; others were pulled from the ether of my mind. And I’m not just being poetic when I say that; I huff a lot of ether.

Quick Buzzkill

As fun as alcohol is, there are still a few shitty downsides: you can't sober up quickly, and you often get a hangover. But Korean researchers have found a way of tweaking booze to limit the fallout without cutting its strength. I guess that's a fair trade if peace and reunification are too tall an order.

Doctors at Chungnam National University studied the properties of oxygenated alcohol - booze with oxygen bubbles added, a popular concoction in their country. In these drinks, oxygen is added the way carbonation is usually added to soda, and the scientists wanted to know if these oxygenated beverages affected people differently than non-oxygenated ones. The answer was a resounding yes.

They ran three experiments using 19.5% alcohol drinks, and measured the speed at which people's blood alcohol dropped to 0.000%. Translation - how fast did they sober up?

The drinks with the added oxygen content sobered people up 20-30 minutes faster, under the influence of the rather potent alcohol they used for the trials. 20% alcohol is around the strength of fortified wine, soju, or a very strong mixed drink, so while shaving a half hour off your drunken tomfoolery might not seem a great deal, when you're trying to fall asleep at night and combating the spins, you'll appreciate it.

The researchers also asked what would change if someone were to drink multiple oxygen-enriched drinks over the course of the night. Would there be a cumulative effect? Again, the answer was yes: people who drank oxygenated booze had less severe and fewer hangovers than people who drank the non-fizzy stuff.

So why does adding O2 to booze lessen the nasty after effects? When you drink ethanol, you body needs to oxidize it to water and carbon dioxide in order to process it. This occurs via hepatic oxidation, where the liver does its thing to counteract the liquor you've just poured down your gullet. The enzymes that process alcohol require oxygen to function, and it's thought that by storing the oxygen in the alcohol itself, the system functions more quickly and efficiently.

The oxygen-enriched alcohol beverage reduces plasma alcohol concentrations faster than a normal dissolved-oxygen alcohol beverage does. This could provide both clinical and real-life significance. The oxygen-enriched alcohol beverage would allow individuals to become sober faster, and reduce the side effects of acetaldehyde without a significant difference in alcohol's effects. Furthermore, the reduced time to a lower BAC may reduce alcohol-related accidents. It seems that these drinks can maintain a high dissolved-oxygen concentration for about 10 to 20 days before the stopper is removed, and for 70 minutes after removing the stopper, respectively, at room temperature.

This has raised such questions as how does oxygen affect the taste of the alcohol, and what drink types does it work with? But why don't you settle down, you lush...they're still working out the drink, er, kinks. And in the meantime you can try the alcohol they used for testing, which was created by Sunyang Co.
